Myrtle A. Powell, a resident of Des Moines since 1943, was born at Madison, Iowa, on May 3, 1890. She was united in marriage to Thomas J. Powell at Minot, North Dakota on July 30, 1904. To this union five children were born.

Much of her life has been devoted to serving others. She has been employed in hospital service in the Des Moines area for the past 17 years. Mrs. Powell was always dearly loved and has been honored on many occasions for her loyalty and devotion. During her final illness, her fellow employees were so solicitous of her welfare and so devoted to her that they daily visited her and offered their services to the family.

She has been a faithful member of the First Church of the Open Bible of this city for many years, and has served loyally in her living and giving. She will be greatly missed. Her Christian devotion reached beyond the borders of her church and community. She also had a world vision contributing to the missionary program of the church and helping to support a missionary program of her niece who is serving the Lord in Brazil.

Mrs. Powell was also a member of the Des Moines Navy Mothers Club No. 12. They will be having a memorial service for her on Friday, September 18 at the club center.

She has been in failing health for the past six months. She passed away at a local hospital on August 31, 1964 at the age of 74 years, 3 months and 23 days.

She is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Hazel Root with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Wilma Siegenthaler of Jefferson, Iowa; also by one son, Lawrence Powell of Des Moines, one sister, Mrs. Iva Lewman of Adel, one brother, William Powell of Norfolk, Nebraska, also by 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, and one sister.
