Call Comes To Richard Allen

Six Weeks Illness Ends Life of Resident of Adel for Past Twenty-Six Years

Richard A. Allen affectionately known to his friends and acquaintances as “Dad Allen” passed away Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harley Tompkins, with whom he has resided since the death of his wife three years ago.

Mr. Allen who would have been 87 years of age had he lived until October, had been ill for about six weeks. Up to the last sickness he had been strong and rugged and few of his friends realized from the work he carried on and the active interest he took in life that he was near that old. Death was due to a general physical breakdown, brought on by his determination not to give up even at his advanced age.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the DeFord Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. M. G. Wilkinson. Pall bearers were Ed. Tompkins, James Johnson, Jake Wolfe, George Lee, Zack Smith and Harley Harper. Burial was at the Bennett cemetery, between Winterset and Earlham.

Mr. Allen was born at Edina, Missouri, October 27, 1854, but came with his parents to Iowa when he was a small boy and with the exception of 15 years spent in Nebraska, Iowa has always been his home. Twenty-six years ago the family moved to Adel. Until his age became a handicap, Mr. Allen was engaged in farming, and for many years followed the work of a teamster around Adel.

Surviving Mr. Allen are two sons and a daughter. They are Clare Allen, whose home is at Burbank, California; Earl Allen of Conger, Iowa and Mrs. Harley Tompkins, of Adel. There are twenty-two grandchildren and thirty-one great grandchildren. Mr. Allen leaves two brothers, George Roy Allen, who lives in Washington, and Robert Allen of California. Four sisters and one brother preceded him in death. One son, two daughters and his wife have gone before.
