Mrs. S. W. McCleary and Mrs. Jessie Schoonover received news of the death of their brother-in-law, Griffen Whitt, at his home in Verdig, Montana. Mr. Whitt was 73 years of age and grew to manhood in Union township and attended school at the Farris school house.
For many years they lived near McKinney, North Dakota, later moving to the oil fields of Montana.
________________________Transcriber’s note: The deceased is in Madison County censuses from 1870 through 1900. His first name per censuses and his gravestone is "Griffea".

Page 8, Column 4Word was received by Mrs. Seth McCleeary that her brother-in-law, Griffea Whitt had died at Verdig, Montana, April 10. Mr. Whitt was a native of Union township.
His parents were Noah and the Matilda Whitt, and came to Madison county during the Civil war from northern Missouri. Griffea attended the Farris school and after the death of his parents, inherited a forty acre farm now a part of the Peter Cunningham farm.
He was married to miss Sarah Nicoson, and after a few years, sold his farm and moved to McKinney, North Dakota, where he homesteaded. Here his family grew up and in a few years he went to Montana, working in the oil fields.
His death was sudden from heart failure at the age of 73 years. Burial was made at Shelby, Montana.
