Services for Bonnie Ann Oberender, 83, of Altoona, who passed away Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at home, will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 7, 2019, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Sayre Cemetery, Winterset, Iowa.

Bonnie Ann Brooker was born at Van Meter, Dallas County, Iowa, on August 22, 1936 to Norwood Franklin and Ethel Bertine (McCleary) Brooker. She lived on a farm by St. Charles. As a girl, she started school at a one room school house. She graduated from St. Charles Community Schools and attended the Elm Grove Methodist Church, not far from her home in the country.

Bonnie’s first love was being a housewife and mother. She worked several jobs during her life. Her first job outside the home was being a Nurse’s Aide on the maternity floor at Iowa Methodist Hospital. She then also worked at Shannon’s Café as a waitress, cleaned Dr. Yugend’s office, worked for Harrison’s Variety Store in the toy isle for eleven years, Piper Day Care Center for five months, Graham’s Department Store for four years, baby sat at The First Assembly of God Church in the nursery, Fareway Grocery Store for five years, had a Retirement Home for two and a half years, then worked as custodian at the First Reformed Church in Pella, with her last job baby sitting for a family in Pella.

She looked at her life as a circle… selling toys to children at Harrison’s, then seeing them register as a bride and groom at Grahams Dept. Store and being able to sell them groceries at the Fareway grocery store.

As Bonnie wrote her own obituary, her goal in life was to be organized.

A quote she remembered by her grandpa McCleary, “I don’t want to be buried with glasses on.”

Bonnie is survived by her son, Caroll (Laurey) Oberender; daughter-in-law, Kathy Oberender; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Lowell, son Keith, and her parents.

Visitation will be held prior to services from 9 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given in Bonnie’s name to the Indianola Public Library.
