Fern Eloise Breckenridge Christensen, 96, went to be with the Lord Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, in Coppell, Texas, where she had lived since 2010.
She had previously lived in Natchitoches and was married to her husband, Raymond L. Christensen Sr., for 67 years. Fern was born in Winterset, Iowa, where she grew up on a farm and upon graduating from Winterset High School she obtained her teaching certificate and began her lifelong profession as an educator. Her first teaching assignment was in Madison County Iowa in a one room schoolhouse.
She married her high school sweetheart, Raymond L. Christensen, Feb. 24, 1942, while he was on leave from the Navy during World War II. Fern taught all ages and became a librarian. Upon completing her PHD/ABD at Southern Illinois University, she was a Professor of Education for 25 years at Northwestern State University of Louisiana in Natchitoches where she retired.
While in Natchitoches, Fern was involved in many civic and religious organizations. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and established the church library. She and her husband were founding members of the National Methodist Historical Committee. Fern was also a member of the Gideon Auxiliary for 30 years and distributed many Bibles. She was an active member with the Daughter of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and The Magna Carta Dames. She was a lifelong member of the Girl Scouts of America and the Lions Club where she was active for many years. She was one of the founders of the Natchitoches Genealogical and Historical Association and was chosen in 2010 to share the honor with her husband as a Natchitoches Treasure, a civic award for their service to the community. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and serving others on many missionary trips both domestic and abroad.
After moving to Coppell, Fern was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, the Lions Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. While at the Christus St. Joseph’s Village, she initiated the collection of books and magazine donations for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Dallas and collected glasses for the Lions Club.
She is survived by her daughter, Tena Allain and husband Michael Allain of Coppell; grandchildren, Joseph Allain of Coppell, Jimmy and Angie Allain, of Garland, Texas, and Jeffery Allain of Frisco, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Lyle Christensen Sr.; her father, Raymond Dean Breakenridge; mother, Vera Mable Bowen Breakenridge; and her son, Dr. R. Lyle Christensen Jr.
Funeral services were Aug. 13 followed with interment at the Dallas – Ft. Worth National Cemetery.
