AGED PIONEER IS DEAD

Thomas E. Jay of 1334 Des Moines St., 70 years old, died at his home March 4. He enlisted in Company K, Thirty-fourth Ohio infantry, Feb. 20, 1864, at the age of 18 years, and took part in fourteen battles. He has been an active member of the G.A.R., first at Dexter, Ia., and then at Des Moines, where he has been associated with both the Crocker and Kinsman posts, having been commander of the latter during the year 1913.

In 1868 he left the old Ohio home and came to Madison county, Iowa. Here he married Florence Medora Hough, June 25, 1871. To this marriage were born four children, of whom Charlie E. died Feb. 27, 1885. Except one year spent in mercantile business in Dexter, Ia., they lived on a farm near Dexter from the date of their marriage till the spring of 1889 when they moved to Des Moines, where they have since resided. His son, Pearl Jay is connected with the St. Joseph News-Press and was long a member of the Register and Leader staff. He attended the funeral of his father here Tuesday.
