Armand “Casey” Cason, 92, of Winterset died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines of complications resulting from hip surgery.

A memorial service will be held at the Winterset Seventh Day Adventist Church Sunday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m., potluck dinner to follow. All who knew him are invited. All who wish to honor Casey’s service to our country are invited to join them for a military burial Monday, Sept. 16, at 9:30 a.m. at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Armand Ralph “Casey” Cason was born to Oren and Vera Cason on July 25, 1927, in Bemidji, Minn. At the encouragement of his father, he joined the Army Transport/Maritime Service. Shortly after, there was a shipyard strike and he received a “Greetings from the President” notice that resulted in his enlistment into the Air Force on Sept. 27, 1946. He joined the maintenance and training crew for the C-54 cargo planes that participated in the Berlin Airlift. After his honorable discharge on Sept. 8, 1949, he trained under the GI Bill as a machinist. Casey married his wife, JoAnn on Jan. 30, 1954, in Papillion, Neb. To this union, five children were born. He and his wife joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church in 1956.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six siblings; his son-in-law, Melvin Purscell, a Vietnam Veteran; and two sons: Danny and Joel.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann of Winterset; his son David (Shannon) of Midland, Texas; his daughter, Carol of Des Moines; his daughter, Janice (Jerry) of Des Moines; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.
