Dean Wallace, 84, of Creston passed away Saturday, September 7, 2019 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Celebration of Life Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 12, 2019 at Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Avenue in Creston.

Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery with graveside military honors provided by Theodore J. Martens V.F.W. Post 1797. Pastor Jodi Rushing and Rev. Jim Morris will officiate.

Open visitation will be 2-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Powers Funeral Home in Creston, with family receiving friends from 5-7:00 p.m. Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Greater Regional Health Care Foundation. Online condolences can be given at powersfh.com.

Dean Melvin Wallace was born July 3, 1935 in Adair County south of Fontanelle, to Melvin Charles Wallace and Ethel Marguerite (Kriens) Wallace. Dean attended country school in the Macksburg and Zion areas, later graduating from Creston High School in 1954. Soon after graduation Dean began working at Creston Feed and Grain with his brother Duane Wallace followed by Brays Grocery Store for a number of years.

In 1955 Dean enlisted in the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country. Following his return from the military, Dean was in shoe sales for several years at The Family Shoe Store. On July 3, 1971 Dean was united in marriage to Betty Kay (Smith) Clayton at the United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Creston. They settled in Creston where he began working for Fareway Grocery Store in the Produce Department for many years.

Dean went to work for Wellman Dynamics for a short time before going to work for the Creston Water Department at the water plant on Summit Lake in the early 80’s. He was later promoted to meter reader and served in that position for many years until his retirement in 2000. During his retirement Dean worked for many years at the Creston News Advertiser. Dean was a member of The United Church of Christ Congregational Church, Creston American Legion Post # 70, Theodore J. Martens V.F.W. Post 1797, Creston Kiwanis, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #605 and a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. In Dean’s spare time he enjoyed volunteering at Greater Regional Health, as well as, spending time with his family and following his two favorite sports teams, The Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears.

Dean is survived by his wife Betty Wallace of Creston; his four children, Marc (wife Bridget) Clayton of Huxley, Ia., Kari Clayton of Boone, Ia., Scott (wife Jennifer) Clayton of Omaha, Neb. and Kaela (husband B.J.) Pumroy of Hastings, Neb.; three brothers, Duane (wife Sonja) Wallace of Orient, Ia., Wendell (wife Shirley) Wallace of Benton, Ia. and Gary (wife Sandy) Wallace of Hillsboro, Mo. two sisters, Darlene Blazek and Sherry Wallace both of Creston; a sister-in-law, Carol Wallace of Creston, Ia.; ten grandchildren, Nathan Clayton (wife Jennette), Shannon (husband Russell Harder), Tanner Clayton (Ashley Clayton), Kody Barton, Holly Barton, Noah Clayton, Baylee Clayton, Brody Clayton Kinnick Pumroy and Maddux Pumroy; seven great-grandchildren, Autumn Clayton, Jocelyn Clayton, Ella Clayton, Natalie Clayton, Nathan Clayton, Liam Clayton and Jameson Clayton; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gerald Wallace and brother-in-law, Louis Blazek.
