Sylvia “Sy” Petersen, 92, of Winterset, died Saturday, August 31, 2019 at her home. A memorial service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, September 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Winterset. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment of her cremains will be in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to her family for a future designation.
Sy was born on February 5, 1927 in Shannon City, Iowa. She was one of twelve children born to Eljay and Mary Jane (Carvey) Hathaway. She was married on March 27, 1948 to Herbert Benge at Indianola, Iowa. She later married Harry Petersen on December 26, 1967 at Omaha, Nebraska.
Sy and Harry lived on their farm near Peru, Iowa for several years, then moved to Winterset, making it their home for the past 40 years. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, and knitting. She and Harry enjoyed camping, fishing and canoeing.
Survivors include her husband, Harry; children, LeRoy (Sue) Benge, Lyla (Rick) Dunmire, and Steve Benge all of Winterset; brother-in-law, Richard (Carolyn) Petersen of Maryville, MO; 11 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; 11 step great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eljay and Mary Jane Hathaway; brothers, Harlan Hathaway, Murry “Bob” (Iola) Hathaway, Harold (Betty) Hathaway, and Charles “Chuck” Hathaway; sisters, Isabelle (Clarence) Griswold, Ruth (Roland) Evans, Rose (Jim) Stuart, Flo (John) Terry, Edith (Dean) Poush, Patricia (Don) Murphy, and Althea (Floyd) Housman; and daughter-in-law, Connie Jean Benge.
Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home Winterset Chapel is handling arrangements for her service.
