Joyce Halley, 78, of West Des Moines died March 29, 2019 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Services will be held at a later date with interment in the Winterset Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.

Joyce Joan Engelking, daughter of William and Sarah (Priske) Engelking, was born January 31, 1941 in Hardin County, Iowa. She graduated high school and continued her education at Drake University, obtaining her Bachelors in Music. Joyce taught elementary school in Iowa for a number of years before returning to Drake to obtain her Law Degree. Joyce was united in marriage with Charles “Ray” Halley in Washington D.C. in 1990. She worked in Washington D.C. for the Department of Treasury for many years before retiring with Ray in Myrtle Beach.

Joyce was active in the Des Moines Community Theatre before moving to Washington D.C. She co-founded the Twin Beach Players Theatre Troupe in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland. After returning to Iowa, Joyce was active in the Women’s Group of Des Moines and enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage. Above all else, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who cherished nothing more than spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Anne Green of Washington D.C.; Pauline (Brian) Hartley of Fort Worth, TX; three grandchildren, Elijah (Veronica) Hartley; Ariel Hartley; Joseph Green; two great granddaughters, Lorelei Hartley, Josephine Hartley; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Sarah Engelking; husband, Ray Halley; two children, Hans Green and Julia Green.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, in the Winterset Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the South Shelter House in the Winterset City Park. Memorials may be directed to the family for a later designation.
