Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 24, from the Slininger Chapel in Jefferson for John A. Cox, 76, longtime Greene county farmer and auctioneer.
The Rev. C. L. Davis, minister of the Salem United Methodist Church in Paton officiated. Mrs. Ray Lind was organist.
Casket bearers were Merril Johnson, Wm. Glawe, Dean Glawe, Harold Stine, Howard Peterson and Harold Peterson. Interment was in Paton Township Cemetery.
John A. Cox was born Aug. 29, 1896, in Madison county, the son of James and Mary Seams Cox. He grew to manhood in Madison county.
On Jan. 25, 1919, John was united in marriage with Marie Barton at Osceola. They were the parents of three daughters and one son.
The family lived in Madison County where they farmed and in 1928 moved to Greene county. They farmed in the Paton and Dana communities, and in 1961 Mr. and Mrs. Cox moved into the town of Paton.
After retirement John followed his hobbies of gardening, fishing and auctioneering. He was a member of the Dana United Methodist Church.
Mr. Cox passed away Aug. 22 at the Greene County Medical Center at the age of 76.
He is survived by his wife, Marie, three daughters, Mrs. Florence Nolte of Syracuse, NY, Mrs. Eldon (Eileen) Scott of Dana and Mrs. Charles (Carol) Kyle of Avoca, one son, Eldon of Fort Dodge; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Cox of St. Charles, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Emma Riether of Truro and Mrs. Bessie McDaniels of Jamestown, ND.
John was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Eugene, Martin and James Frank, two sisters, Rebecca and Bertha, one great granddaughter and one great grandson.
