Des Moines, IowaPatricia Ann Work, 67, loving mother to her children and their spouses, Courtney Work and Jay Ennis (Des Moines), Channing Work and Sam Crandall (San Diego). Married 45 years to her best friend and love of her life Dr. John Work. Beloved “Gee Gee” to her grandchildren, Ian and Olivia Graham, Murray Work, Deidra, Shae and Blythe Ennis. Dedicated and loved aunt and sister in law to Chick and Mike Duffy, their daughters and spouses: Kelly and Jerry Bonner, Laura Duffy and Keri Davis, Erin and Cindy DeAngelis-Duffy, Bridget and Benji Orr. A remarkable, generous, kind, and committed friend to countless others, left us peacefully on December 4th, 2012. There will be a Celebration of Pat’s life 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Dunn’s Funeral Home.
Born in Des Moines, Iowa to Esther and George Ronan July 23rd, 1945. A Des Moines native, she attended Hanawalt, Callanan, Roosevelt High School (’63), William Woods College, University of Iowa and AIB. She worked for the Des Moines Register in the Advertising department until they began their family. She was passionate about being a homemaker. “Gee Gee” as coined by her grandson Ian became a name that she would embrace as her own. Gee Gee’s passions included her gardening, sports, trivia, dance, ballet, art, music, friends, family, but most of all her grandchildren.
She was a lover of all things beautiful, irreverent, quirky and competitive. From the beautiful Angels she collected that had vibrant colored outfits, to a night of board games and “Catch Phrase”. If there was fun, food, and drink involved, Pat was there.
When you visited her house during the Christmas season it was clear Pat loved everything about Christmas. From the Santa Claus that stays out year round, to the 8 themed Christmas trees placed lovingly throughout the house. Traditions were the core of their home. The holidays brought Gee Gee’s cooking out, Homemade fudge, Ravioli with homemade sauce, and her famous Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake on your birthday.
She wore purple whenever she could. And if you were loved by her you never got past her without a kiss that left nice lipstick mark on your cheek. Affectionately called “Pat Tats.”
Her bridge club brought her so much happiness. Not only because she was good at bridge, but the relationships and deep connections she shared with her friends brought endless joy and stories to share.
Pat loved stories. When she was introduced to the IPhone, it opened a world of ways to share more of her thoughts and wit. You may have received a text from her at 5pm or 2am, her mind and fingers were always willing to share an opinion or a laugh.
She had an amazing sense of humor, and the ability to giggle for hours about something that tickled her funny bone. A giggle that if you experienced was infectious and spread to everyone in the room, maybe for days.
On her bed stand sits a fitting tribute to the passion for family and friends. It reads: “You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have really lived, are the moments when you done things in the spirit of love.”
The family will receive friends from 5 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2012 at the funeral home.
