From the 1940 Federal Census and his parent's obituaries (on this website), Richard was born in Iowa about 1933 to Wendel and Ruby (Connell) Nelson. By 1935, the family was living in Winterset where Richard's father ran a hardware store.

Per articles in The Winterset Madisonian, Richard enrolled in the Liberal Arts program at the University of Iowa in 1952 and in the fall of 1955 entered their Dental College.

Richard died at Denver, Colorado October 15, 2018.
