Charles J. James, 69, of 4817 Seneca Ave. died of a respiratory ailment Wednesday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Basilica of St. John, of which he was a member. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Calvary Cemetery at Pocahontas.

Mr. James was born in St. Charles and lived in Des Moines most of his life, retiring from Armstrong Tire and Rubber Co. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Catholic Order of Forestry, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and Johnston American Legion post.

Survivors include his wife, Madeline; two sons, Bill of Milford and Greg of Des Moines; a daughter, Therese Shaw, and two sisters, Evelyn Richey and Darlene Johnson, all of Des Moines; three brothers, Don and Dale, both of Des Moines, and Phil of Minneapolis; and five grandchildren.

The family will visit with friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home, where there will be a 5:30 p.m. vigil service. Memorial contributions may be made to his church of St. Vincent De Paul.

CHARLES J. JAMES

Charles J. James, 69, Des Moines, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.

Graveside services were held at the Basilica of St. John, Des Moines, on Saturday, Nov. 21. The Rev. Hogan officiated at graveside services held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Calvary Cemetery, Pocahontas, where military graveside rites were conducted by the Pocahontas American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Madeline; sons, Bill James of Milford, formerly of Pocahontas, and Greg James, Des Moines; daughter, Therese Shaw, Des Moines; five grandchildren; brothers, Don and Dale James, both of Des Moines; and Phil James of Minneapolis, MN; and sisters, Evelyn Richey and Darlene Johnson both of Des Moines.

Charles J. James served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He married Madeline Murphy of Pocahontas, and the couple lived in Des Moines, where he had been employed with the Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company until retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul; the Catholic Order of Forestry; the American Legion Post of Johnston; and was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
