Dean Newlin

Des Moines - Dean passed away on January 2, 2019 in Austin, Texas while visiting family for Christmas.

Dean was born Merle Dean Newlin on January 12, 1950 to Coella Mae Bennett and Merle Lewis Newlin in Earlham, Iowa. He attended Southeast Polk High School and entered the Marine Corps in the Fall of 1969. Following service to his country, he was employed as a field service representative for Hicklin Diesel (later Interstate Diesel) for 28 years. He retired as a mechanic for Des Moines Public Schools after 18 years of service.

Dean is survived by his wife Jean of 8 years and daughters Kimberly Gaylor (Bryan) Pella, Iowa; Angela Springer (Jerry) Austin, Texas; and son Jeremy Newlin, Round Rock, Texas. Stepsons are Brian Copic (Melanie) Palm Coast, Florida and Chris Copic, Johnston, Iowa. Siblings are Barbara Kading (Bill) Casey. Iowa; John Newlin (Judy) Osceola, Iowa and Jerrie Newlin (Lavonne) Meadville, Missouri; 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents Coella Copsin and Merle Newlin and sister Phyllis Ann.

Dean loved hunting and fishing and had a special passion for racing where he worked on pit crews for late models, sprint cars and micro sprints. He loved spending time on Sun Valley Lake skiing, tubing, swimming and fishing. Most special are those times spent at the lake with his family.

Memorial Service will be held at Bloomfield United Methodist Church, 5930 Indianola Road, Des Moines, Iowa on Friday, February 1 at 11:00am followed by burial at the VA Cemetery, Van Meter, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday, January 31st from 5-8:00pm at Bloomfield Church. Memorials will be directed to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota.
