Mr. William Edmond Compton, 85, of Charlotte, died December 19, 2018. A service to celebrate his life will be in April, 2019 at Myers Park Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC. Date and time will be forthcoming.

Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home, Weddington Chapel.

Mr. Compton, 85, of Charlotte, NC, died Dec. 19, 2018 at Atrium Hospital in Pineville, NC from esophageal cancer.

Bill was born to Emma and Marion Compton on their farm in the rural community of Earlham, Iowa October 11, 1933. Following graduation from high school in Earlham in 1951 he attended Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa. He was awarded a BS degree in Farm Operations and at graduation was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the UA Air Force. He completed his service commitment after receiving USAF Navigation training and serving in the Air Force Officer Candidate School as a Military Law instructor. Bill and the former Twila Rhea Moore were married in Earlham on September 8, 1955 before embarking on the Air Force Assignment in Texas.

Bill and wife Twila returned to Iowa with their two young sons in 1958 where he was a sales representative for A. O. Smith Harvestore for 5 years until joining the Agricultural Division of The Upjohn Company as a sales representative. Daughter Lynn was born during this time. The next 30 years were with Upjohn serving in numerous sales, marketing and management positions. He retired in 1993 as Director of US Operations in the Ag Division. Bill received the prestigious W. E. Upjohn Award and was also named to the Upjohn Sales Academy. He also served as Chairman of the Board of the National Feed Ingredient Association, an industry trade association. The last 25 years of Bill’s career were spent in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the corporate headquarters of Upjohn.

Over the years Bill served in a variety of church positions including Elder in the Presbyterian, Deacon in the Congregational church and he was a Deacon in the Myers Park Baptist Church at the time of his death. Bill was active in his Homeowners Association and served on several of its boards and in all of its offices.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his son, Steven Paul Compton. Surviving are his wife, Twila; son, Scott Compton and his wife Diane of Northglenn, Colorado, his daughter Lynn Compton of Charlotte and his grandsons, Merrit Compton of Denver, and Drew Compton of Thornton, CO; sister Norma Jean Moreland of Mesa, AZ and nieces and nephews.

A service celebrating his life will be at 1:00 PM Saturday, April 27, 2019 at Myers Park Baptist Church. The family will receive guests at their home following the service.

Memorial gifts may be given to Myers Park Baptist Church. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Service, Matthews Chapel.
