November 2018Charlotte Marie (Goetz) Simons Rottinghaus, 90, of Winterset died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018. She was living at West Bridge Care & Rehabilitation.
Mass was at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Madrid on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2018. The VFW Auxiliary served a luncheon at the VFW hall in Madrid following the service. Burial was at the Fontanelle Cemetery at Fontanelle, Iowa.
Charlotte Marie was born July 10, 1928, in Adair County, Iowa, to Eugene and Gertie (Meisenheimer) Goetz. She attended country school until the end of her eighth grade, then attended high school in Fontanelle, graduating in 1946. Charlotte then attended Creston College for two summers after her high school graduation, majoring in education. At the same time, she taught at country school during the school year. Charlotte went on to attend Drake University in Des Moines, to complete her teaching degree. She taught school at Fontanelle, Bridgewater, Casey rural schools and at Mingo Community School in Mingo, Iowa, teaching second grade.
Charlotte married Vincent Simons of Dexter, on June 1, 1953, at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart; five children were born to this union. They farmed, living near Dexter, Penn Center, Panora, Booneville and Fontanelle. In January 1960, they moved to Madrid, Iowa, giving up farming. This marriage was dissolved in 1979.
Charlotte worked in Madrid at Federal Prescription, Massey-Ferguson, Madrid Schools and at a restaurant in Madrid. Later until her retirement in 1994, Charlotte worked at the Madrid Home for the Aged. Charlotte married Henry Rottinghaus of Cambridge, Iowa on Sept. 20, 1994, at St. Aquinas Catholic Church in Ames. Henry passed away on Sept. 20, 2010.
Charlotte then came to Winterset to live closer to her two daughters in May 2014, to live in a nursing home. Charlotte was a member of the St. Malachy’s Catholic Church, VFW Auxiliary, Legion Auxiliary all of Madrid.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dennis; grandchildren, Jacob, Rebecca and Tyler; great grandchildren, Jordan and Christopher; three brothers, Herbert, Donald and Marvin; two sisters-in-law, Mildred and Linda; and nieces and nephews.
She is survived by daughters, Cheryl (John) Gray of Winterset, Charlene (Robert) Robinson of Winterset and Carla (James) Correll of Arvada, Colo.; a son, Norman of Madrid; 13 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren with one on the way; a sister, Betty Murphy-Mills of Fontanelle; a sister-in-law, Peggy Goetz of Fontanelle; and many other family members and friends.
Arrangements are being handled by Iles Funeral Home – Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Chapel.
