Grace Iona Keller, widow of Arthur W. Keller, died February 13, 1985 at the Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa of complications following surgery for a perforated ulcer.
Grace was born in Adair County, Iowa to Clark and Edith Gray Phillips on August 30, 1902. She grew to womanhood in Grand River Township. She received her education in the Grand River schools and graduated from Greenfield High School following which she taught in a rural school in Adair County.
On October 31, 1921, she was married to Arthur W. Keller at the Methodist parsonage in Greenfield. To them were born five children Jack, Ethel, Raymond, Cecil and Richard. Her husband died March 9, 1971; and son, Richard, October 8, 1983. She was also preceded in death by an infant brother and an infant granddaughter.
Grace and Arthur farmed in Madison and Adair counties for nearly 50 years. In 1970 they retired from farming in Lincoln Township near Stuart, and moved to a home they had purchased in Greenfield. Nine years ago Grace moved to Maple Village in south Greenfield and was residing there at the time of her death.
She is survived by sons, Jack Keller and wife Bernice of Seattle, Washington; Raymond Keller and wife Joanne of Redfield, Iowa; Cecil Keller and wife Donna of Santa Clara, California; daughter, Ethel Handley and husband Bob of Greenfield, Iowa; daughter-in-law Hannelore Keller of Peru, Indiana; 19 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; a brother, Elmer Phillips and wife Eva of Winterset, Iowa; a sister, Viola Miller and husband Arthur of Anaconda, Montana; three sisters-in-law, Pearle Winn and husband Wilton of Greenfield, Iowa; Laura Perkins and husband Marion of Des Moines, Iowa; Gertrude Hepp and husband Ross of Elm Grove, Wisconsin, and aged aunt, Bertha Killam of Greenfield, Iowa; nieces and nephews, cousins and may friends.
Grace loved the beauty of flowers and was extremely happy when working with them both indoors and out. They thrived with her care and through them she gave much pleasure and joy to her family and friends. She was also an avid gardener and always maintained a well tended garden even up until this past summer.
She was a member of the Garden Club, Hobby Club, Martha Circle and the Greenfield United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were conducted February 16, 1985 at the United Methodist Church, Greenfield, Iowa, with the Rev. William E. Olmsted officiating. Mrs. Alice Hogan was the organist and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ray were vocalists. Casket bearers were John Keller, Daniel Keller, Terry Handley, Douglas Handley, Robert Keller, Donald Keller, Virgil Baudler and Randall Handley. Floral committee was Miss Cleoma Rigg and Mrs. Ruby Jacobson. Interment was in Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, Iowa.
