Iles Funeral Home
Des Moines, Iowa

Stella Imogene Kasal was born February 20, 1928, in Grundy County, Missouri, to Merritt and Lana (Burton) Moore. We all knew her as Imogene, or Imy, because although Grandpa Moore insisted on naming her after his mother, Grandma Moore refused to call her Stella.

Imy’s family moved to Burlington, Iowa, in 1941, where she graduated from high school. They then moved to Toledo, Iowa, where she met “the most handsome man” she ever saw, Chuck Kasal. Chuck and Imy were married September 26, 1946. They moved to Earlham in 1947, where they lived for 57 years. After Chuck’s death in 1998, Imy moved to Waukee in 2004.

Imy was a proud Democrat, a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waukee Women’s Club, and Catholic Women’s Bridge Club. She was an avid reader and a skilled cribbage player. She once had the much-coveted perfect hand of 29, causing Chuck to refuse to play cribbage with her for several weeks. Until the day she was admitted into the hospital, she was still cruising around in her convertible, going to the YMCA, and enjoying a glass of good wine or scotch (or even mediocre wine or scotch).

Near the end of June she became ill and was diagnosed with renal failure. Despite being given 3-4 days to live, she moved to Kavanaugh House, where she held a 30-day party with numerous family and friends. But all parties must come to an end, and on August 9, 2018, she died at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 90.

Imy was preceded in death by her husband, Charles V. Kasal, her daughter, Cindy Tutrone, and brothers, Ivan and Dale Moore. She is survived by her children, Dixie Daggett, Dinah (Rusty) Carnes, Michael Craig Kasal, and Jeanne (Steve) Osborn; grandchildren, Wade and Clay Daggett, Michael, Daniel, and Timothy Scar; Sarah Nevins and Anne (Nevins) Baarda, Michael and Brett Kasal, Jessica (Osborn) Spencer, Cassandra (Osborn) Selgrade, Zachary, Madeline, Olivia, and Emilia Osborn; great-grandchildren Payton, Paige, Hayden, Grady, Jackson, Jude, Gabriel, Christopher, Anthony, Danielle, Tyler, Greta, Adaline, Rome, Faith, Elisabeth, Kaden, Trinity, Lumen, Orion, and Alexandra; great-great granddaughter Alice; her sister, Twila Compton and many more dearly-loved family members and friends.

A memorial mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waukee, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private inurnment will be at National Cemetery near Vining, IA. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
