Mary Maurine, daughter of George Ellsworth and Mary Myrtle (Rhode) Bricker, was born April 6, 1902 in Earlham, Iowa. In February 1992 she entered the Community Care Center in Stuart after breaking a bone in her right leg and suffering a severe bout of pneumonia, and remained there until her death on April 9, 1996.
Mary attended school in Earlham and in Memphis, Nebraska where her family lived for a time and graduated from the Earlham Academy in 1920 where she excelled in declamatory competitions. She took declamatory courses at Drake University.
Her father and paternal grandfather operated general stores in Earlham and other communities.
On June 15, 1925 she was united in marriage to Alphonsus D. (Al) Byrne of Baring, Missouri, at the home of here parents in Earlham with Rev. G.J. Toher, pastor of All Saints Church in Stuart, officiating. She embraced the Catholic faith several years after her marriage.
Mary and her husband operated a grocery store in Earlham for many years. She moved to Stuart in 1967 following the death of her husband.
At different stages of her life, she enjoyed sewing and quilting, spectator sports (especially baseball and football), and activity in the Cosmopolitan Club of Earlham, the Golden Chain Club of Stuart, and All Saints parish.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, three sisters (one of whom died in infancy), and one grandchild.
Survivors include her two sons, George D. Byrne of Oak Park, Illinois and Terence E. Byrne of Rockville, Maryland; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, and other relatives and friends.
The funeral mass was celebrated by Msgr. Joseph Ryan on April 13, 1996 at All Saints Church Annex in Stuart. Serving at the altar were Seth Gibson and Ryan Beaman. David Tisl provided vocal selections accompanied on the organ by Ida Griffin. Ushers were Norbert Tigges and Pat Doud. Casket bearers were Jim Nevins, Joe Nevins, Mark Byrne, Hugh Mixon, Joseph Byrne and Stephen Byrne. Interment was in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Baring, Missouri, with Rev. Richard C. Hunkins officiating.
