Jerry Thomas Butler

Jerry Thomas Butler,84, of Salem, OR, passed away on February 1, 2018.

Jerry was born in Winterset, IA on December 7, 1933.

Jerry was married to Cathleen Gayle Butler, they were married for 44 years.

He served in the Navy from 1953 -1954, during the Korean War, aboard the original U.S.S. Essex - CVA9.

Jerry was an avid Barbershopper in many choruses and quartets. His favorite quartet was Sweet Spirit, which is a gospel quartet. The four last chorus he sang with in Salem, Oregon and favorite because they sang for pleasure was with the Breeze Guys Chorus until he could no longer sing with them in July 2017.He spent many years in fine tenor voice with the SPEBSQSA in Southern California and in Oregon. Jerry enjoyed woodworking which he made various items for family and friends, he even made two podiums for the church. Jerry enjoyed Hotwheels and he attended the Mid-Valley Hotwheelers meetings.

Jerry was a 9th grade Sunday school teacher in California in the mid 1960's. He and Cathy taught preschooler's and kindergartners for a while before and after they were married in 1973. He was also an adult Sunday school teacher at Salem First Free Methodist Church after we moved to Oregon in 1995.9th grade Sunday school teacher in California in in the mid 1960's. Jerry is survived by his spouse, Cathleen, Five children, at least 9 Grandchildren, and at least 11 Great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, February 15th at 3:00 PM at Free Methodist Church, Salem.
