Mrs. Hess Succumbs At Early, Services Held Monday

EARLY – Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Hess, 88, of Early died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lee Curry at Sac City Saturday morning following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held in the Early Presbyterian church Monday afternoon, October 28 at 2 o’clock p.m. Rev. Joseph M. Doms officiated. Mrs. Ralph Meyers and Mrs. A. J. Simpson were in charge of the flowers. Music was provided by Mrs. William Hall and Mrs. Rufus Mau and Neal Hess, soloist, Sandra Burns was the organist. Pallbearers were Byrhl Nadelhoffer, Ted Struchen, Carl Grinyer, Roe Lashier, Fayne Haradon, and Cecil Engler. Interment was in the Early Union Cemetery.

Elizabeth Ann Steele, daughter of James and Jane Gibbs Steele, was born on January 31, 1869 at Biggensville, Ill. and died October 26, 1957 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lee Curry at Sac City. She had reached the age of 88 years, eight months and 25 days.

The family moved to Iowa when she was two years of age, locating at Winterset, later moving to Storm Lake.

February 9, 1895 she was united in marriage to James A. Hess at Storm Lake. Their first six years of married life were spent on a farm in Decatur County. In 1901 they moved to a farm in Sac County. In March of 1919 they moved to Early.

Mr. Hess died on March 24, 1935 and she lived alone until September 4, 1956 when failing health made it necessary for her to make her home with her daughter.

Surviving her are two sons, Paul Hess of Early and Harold Hess of Oldebolt; three daughters, Edna Hess of Marshalltown, Mrs. Coral Curry of Sac City and Mrs. Neva Bourdaghs of Stillwater, Minn.; 17 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Martha Mills of Sioux City.
