Mrs. Elizabeth J. Sherman, daughter of William and Nancy Bard was born at Trimble Co., Ohio, August 29, 1839. In 1856 she with her parents, moved to a farm in Madison county, Iowa.

She was married to William Gore in the month of October 1859 at her home. He enlisted and was severely wounded in the battle of Altoona October 5, and nineteen days later he died. She was united in marriage to Joseph Sherman October 27th, 1875 and they moved to Storm Lake in 1880. When she married Dr. Sherman he had two motherless children, Mrs. Nettie Clemons, who died seven years ago and Mrs. Ida E. DeLand of Storm Lake to whom she was a devoted mother.

Two children were born to them, William of Los Angeles, Cal., and Mrs. Nora Eggy of Stetler Alta, Canada. Her husband died June 28, 1904. She resided in Storm Lake until five years ago when mental trouble necessitated her being taken to the hospital at Cherokee where she died at 3:30 March 25.

Mrs. Sherman was a devoted Christian and a loyal Methodist. Her goodness manifested itself in kind and helpful deeds to all she came in contact with. She loved young and old and drew them to her without exception. Her unselfishness was the marked characteristic of her life. She lived a saintly life and God took her to himself. Mrs. Sherman was a member of the W.R.C. of this city and an active worker in the organization as long as her health permitted.

The body was brought here from Cherokee Friday and taken to the home of her sister, Mrs. J.A.P. Harlan. The funeral was held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at three o’clock, Rev. Pye officiating. In addition to the children Mrs. Sherman leaves two sisters, Mrs. J.A.P. Harlan and Mrs. John Wilcox also a brother, W. W. Bard, all of this county.
