Dallas Center - Edwin E. Hakes passed away March 8, 2018 from complications from Alzheimer's disease at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center, Iowa.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 13, 2018 at the Brandt/Iles Funeral Home in Dallas Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be at the same facility on Wednesday, March 14th at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the Earlham Cemetery in Earlham, Iowa.

Ed was born in Des Moines, Iowa, July 19, 1930 to Ralph and Pearl Hakes. He graduated from Dallas Center High School in 1949 and was the president of his class. He was also named Honorary Mayor of Dallas Center. Ed was instrumental in founding the Dallas Center Jaycees. He was employed by HyLine International for 40 years before retiring at age 62 as a statistician.

Ed enjoyed being a ham radio operator, listening to big band music, arguing politics, fishing, and watching sports, including the Iowa Hawkeyes. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and was proud to carry on the legacy of his father: to build a better generation.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Judy, parents; Ralph and Pearl, and brothers; Ken and Dennis. Survived by his children; Holly Petersen (Jeff), Val "Mouse" Hakes, and Jeff Hakes (Laura), his grandchildren; Josh Hakes (Niki), Darcey Petersen, and Lauren Petersen, great grandchildren; Benjamin and Nolan Hakes, and sisters-in-law; Daisy Hakes and Kate Hakes.

The family is asking in lieu of flowers, that you make donations to Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center.
