Richard Elmer Shirbroun was born in Coon Rapids, Iowa 22 October 1929 to hard-working and loving parents, Clara M. Bell and Francis C. Shirbroun. He shared life with his sister, Genevieve Lee. After school in Coon Rapids, Dick enrolled at Iowa State College, graduating with his degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1952. While in college, he married Treva Teter. Together, they raised three children – Randy, Camille and Jim.

Dick was a proud serving member of the United States Air Force and was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. Following service, he returned to Coon Rapids to establish his veterinary practice. In addition to a host of community activities, Dick was very actively involved in all aspects of the profession he loved. He was recognized among his peers locally, statewide and nationwide. Among his extensive involvement, he served as President to the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, received the American Association of Bovine Practioneers Award for Excellence in Preventative Medicine and was a recipient of Iowa State’s Stange “Gentle Doctor” Award.

In 1989, Dick married Wava Frank and her children, Josh, Sara and Jon. He continued active practice in Coon Rapids until 2001, when they moved to Illinois where Dick worked for the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Professional Liability Insurance Trust.

Dick and Wava moved to Winterset, Iowa in 2008.

After a heroic battle with Alzheimer’s, Dick ended this leg of his life’s journey on 4 March 2018. While it is true Alzheimer’s may have taken his life, the disease was never successful in robbing him of his personality and genuine goodness. Dick transitioned from this life to the next a very happy man.
