T. B. Steel Dies Tuesday

T. B. Steele died at his home in Laurens Tuesday afternoon, October 28 and the funeral is being held this afternoon at two o’clock from the Christian church. The Steels were among the very first settlers in Laurens, coming about the time the North Western railroad was built here in 1882. Laurens has been their home ever since.

Thomas Benton Steel was born at Saint Charles, Iowa, February 29, 1856. Died at his home in Laurens, Iowa, October 28, 1930, age 74 years, 7 months and 29 days. He was married to Ida M. Nickle in Saint Charles, December 26, 1880. They came to Laurens in 1882. He set up a blacksmith shop and worked at his trade as long as he was able. When the Christian church was organized in 1892, Mr. Steel was one of the charter members and was chosen as one of the first Board of Deacons. In the church, as in every other work with which he was -----
never did anything in an ill-hearted manner. He put his whole life and soul into his work. He gave himself in this same spirit for his faith in Christ and His Church.

He is survived by his widow who has so faithfully attended him during the long period of his failing health. There is also their adopted son, F. C. Steel and his family of Ortonville, Minnesota and two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Herrold of Luther, Oklahoma and Mrs. Doctor Jones of Boone.

The funeral was held from the Christian church at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 30, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wm. H. Knotts, assisted by Rev. S. T. Grove of Plover.

The relatives from out of town who were here to attend the funeral of Mr. Steel were his son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Frank C. Steel of Ortonville, Minnesota, Mrs. Steel’s brother, J. K. Nickle of St. Charles and his two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Cox, also of St. Charles and Mrs. Claude DeBord and husband of Garner.
