Ferd Schmidt Dies New Years Day

The first death for this community was that of Ferd Schmidt, 76, who died January 1st at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines following several weeks illness. He was taken to the hospital about three weeks ago for a general checkup. His condition was more serious than at first thought and was taken ill with pneumonia soon after entering the hospital.

Mr. Schmidt was a retired farmer and moved here in 1919. He is survived by his wife, Jennie, a daughter, Mrs. Lee Moore, and a son, Lloyd, of Denver, Colorado, two grandchildren, Leota Moore, of Des Moines, and the Schmidt’s baby, Carolyn.

Ferdinand John Schmidt, son of William and Lydia Schmidt, was born at Winesburg, Ohio, December 9, 1867, and passed away at the Lutheran hospital in Des Moines on January 1, 1944, at the age of 76 years and 24 days.

At the age of 8 years, he came with his parents to Madison County, Iowa, where they settled on a farm six miles south of Dexter.

When he was 18 years of age, he went to California where he worked on a ranch for one year and a half. He returned to Iowa where he farmed with his brothers several years.

On November 7, 1894, he was united in marriage to Jennie Skinner. To this union were born two children, a son and a daughter.

He lived on the farm until the fall of 1919 when he and his wife moved to Stuart.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lula Moore, of Dexter, Iowa, and one son, Lloyd, of Denver, Colorado; two grandchildren, Leota Moore, of Des Moines, and Carolyn Schmidt, of Denver, Colo.; also six brothers: George and Joe, of Stuart, Frank and Rube, of Atlantic, Edd, of Lakeport, Calif., Harve, of Menlo; and three sisters, Mrs. Tillie Hain and Mrs. Ida Thompson, of Stuart, and Mrs. Amanda Fredrick, of Parker, South Dakota. Two brothers, Henry, of Middletown, California, and William of Chicago, and one sister, Mary Fink, of Stuart, preceded him in death.

He was a good, honest, upright citizen and helpful neighbor, always ready to lend a hand in time of sickness and need. He was a kind husband and father and enjoyed his home. He patiently endured his last weeks of suffering, keeping his troubles to himself from his family and friends.

He attended the Christian church of Stuart for the last 25 years.

He belonged to the Stuart Order of Odd Fellows Lodge, No. 214.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from the Christian church, conducted by Rev. Akins, of Logan, Iowa, assisted by Rev. J. A. Saum, pastor of the local church. Hymns were sung by Clyde and Robin Lawson, Bert Russell and Leonard Smith, with Robert Lawson at the piano.

Following the regular service, the Odd Fellows gave their service.

Casket bearers were: Earl Messenger, Dan Hill, Earl Wise, Ben Moulton, Earl Williams and Ward Ruscher.

Flower ladies were Mesdames Earl Williams, Hazel Compton, Walter Fay and Bessie Peers.

Those attending from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. Rube Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Jave and son, Mrs. Chris Johnson and daughter and Mr. Frank Schmidt, of Atlantic, Mr. and Mrs. Harve Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Reed, of Menlo; Mr. and Mrs. Leland Schmidt, of Guthrie Center; Mrs. Combs and Miss Leota Moore, of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Oaks and Mrs. And Mrs. Lester Aldrich of Earlham; Mr. and Mrs. Lew Skinner, of Council Bluffs; and John Wetrich, of Dexter.
