Page 6, Column 4Death of Mrs. Sidney J. Herrick
Rebecca A. McGinnis was born September 25, 1861, in Madison county, Iowa, and in early childhood moved with her parents to Adair county, settling in Jefferson township, where she has lived until her Master called her away last Monday, April 23.
She was one of a family of twelve children, eight boys and four girls, all of whom grew to have families of their own except one. The brothers and sisters are: Joseph, Theodore, Oliver, Simpson, Joshua, Albert, John and Charles, the last named dying when a small boy, and Mrs. T. J. Low, Mrs. Newt Hines of Kansas and Mrs. Omer Kirlin. Joseph, who lived at Winterset, Iowa, died a few years ago, and Mrs. T. J. Low last winter. The rest are still living to mourn the loss of the sister. All were present at the funeral except Oliver, who lives at Ponca City, Oklahoma, and was unable to be here on account of sickness at home, and Mrs. Hines of Kansas.
The deceased was married to Sidney J. Herrick at her home in Jefferson township December 21, 1879. Six children were born to them, five girls and one boy. Of these, two are married, Mrs. Augusta McGinnis and Mrs. Rella Jones, while Clara, Louie, Elmer and Grace are still at home.
Mrs. Herrick was converted and joined the Christian church at Louck’s grove in 1878 and has been a consistent, faithful member ever since. She has been a faithful, loving, true and devoted wife, mother, sister and friend, and the vacant place in home will be keenly felt and hard to bear many times, but the bereaved husband and children have the blessed assurance that they may meet her in a home where death and suffering never comes.
While wife and mother is gone, her example and influence is still felt with them as memory goes back over the years past when she stood by the side of her companion in the stern problems of life, proffering suggestions and cheering him up when downcast, and as she gave to the children advice from a heart full of love, the same advice will come to them now in their memory of her that will make its influence felt in their lives.
She has been a sufferer from cancer for the past sixteen months, always doing what she would to help herself, having been confined to her bed only one day. She was in a stupor most of the day, but at times seemed to realize who was near her.
Her life has been one of devotion to her family, and her work in rearing her children has been a success in that she has left a family of nice young people.
The funeral was held at the Loucks Grove church on Wednesday at eleven o’clock. A large assemblage of friends and neighbors were present to pay their last respects to the deceased. E. B. Christ, H. Loucks, Mr. Pringey and Joe Wilson acted as pall bearers and we failed to learn the names of the other two. Her remains were laid to rest in Loucks Grove cemetery.
The bereaved have the sympathy of all who know them.
