G. T. SHANNON, 72, FORMER, ATLANTIC MAN, DIES SUNDAY

George Thomas Shannon, 72, retired Council Bluffs Union Pacific railroad employee, and former Atlantic man, died at 11 a.m. Sunday at Jennie Edmundson hospital there as the result of a stroke. He had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Shannon was born in Madison county, Ia., March 28, 1874, and came to Atlantic in 1880. He was married here in 1892 to Eva Wright, who died May 7, 1945. Mr. and Mrs. Shannon left here in 1909 and he was employed with the Union Pacific in Council Bluffs until his retirement two years ago.

Surviving are a son, Arleigh Shannon, and a daughter Mrs. George Duchmann, both of Council Bluffs; three brothers, E. T. Shannon of Atlantic, H. L. Shannon of Anita and W. H. Shannon of Butte, Mont.; three sisters, Mrs. H. F. Harris and Miss Dolly Shannon of Des Moines, and Mrs. J. F.. Steinhart of Chicago; two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

No funeral arrangements have been made.

Stroke Fatal to Tom Shannon, 72

Was Retired U. P. Railroad Switchman

George T. Shannon, 72, 424 North Twenty fourth street former city alderman and retired railroad employee died of stroke Sunday at a local hospital. He had been ill about three months.

Born at Winterset, he had been a resident of Council Bluffs for 34 years. He was employed by the Union Pacific railroad as a switchmen for 22 years and belonged the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen and Cobia lodge No. 631 A. F. and A. M.

Survivors are a daughter Mrs. Lucille Duchmann of Council Bluffs, son Arle Shannon of Council Bluffs, three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Harris of Council Bluffs, Miss Dollie Shannon of Des Moines and Mrs. Jess Steinhart of Chicago, three brothers Ed of Atlantic, Henry of Anita and W. H. of Butte, Mont., two grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The body will lie in state at Cutler’s funeral home until services at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Cedar Lawn cemetery.
