JOHN MAURICE WATTS, Winterset

1936 - 2017

John Watts, 80, of Winterset, Iowa, died Friday, June 9, 2017, at Winterset Care Center North in Winterset. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, June 12, at St. Patrick’s Irish Settlement Catholic Church in Madison County, Iowa with Fr. Dan Kirby, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Church Cemetery with military honors.

John was born on December 17, 1936, at Booneville, Iowa to Garner and Clara (Lynch) Watts. He graduated from Winterset High School in 1955 and entered the US Army in 1959, having served during the beginning of the Viet Nam Conflict. On June 24, 1967 he married Karen Sangster in Des Moines, Iowa. To this union were born two children, Anne and John.

John spent most of his life in Madison County and Winterset. Through the years John had worked for the Iowa Inspection Bureau, Green Colonial, Iowa Supply, EDS, and Dollar General Store. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and The Knights of Columbus. John enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Hawkeyes, doing Word Search, and petting his cat, PJ.

John is survived by his wife, Karen Watts of Winterset; children, Anne Watts (Pat Baker) of Lorimor and John Watts of Des Moines; and sister, Kay Johnson of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Garner and Clara (Lynch) Watts; and brother, Ray Watts.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 7 PM at McCalley-Collins Funeral Home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 PM. A Vigil service will be at 7 PM. Memorials may be directed to his family for a future designation.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
