January 24, 1925 - May 22, 2017

Joann Charlotte Kirkhart, 92, of Winterset, Iowa, passed away in her sleep May 22, 2017, at the Winterset Care Center South.

There was a private family viewing before cremation on Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Ochiltree Funeral Service. A family gathering for interment at the Lorimor Cemetery will be at a later date.

Joann was born January 24, 1925, to Raymond E. and Lenora “Irene” (Slaughter) Strain of Lorimor. June 15, 1945, she married Allan Leaton Kirkhart. He preceded her in death July 15, 1996. She is survived by her sister Twyla Walton of Branson, MO. and Bruce Strain of Scottsdale, AZ.; her three children, Roxanne King of Greenwood, MO., Alynn Huffman (Gary) of Central City, CO., and Rodric Kirkhart.

Joann has four grandchildren, Raquel Benson (Bill) of Aurora, CO., Raelynn King-Barnhart of Lees Summit, MO., David Huffman (Ada) of Golden, CO., and Rayna (Dave) Huffman of Oklahoma City, OK. Her five great grandchildren are Meagan and Madison Nelson, Samantha and Sydney Barnhart, and Renne Huffman.

Joann graduated from Lorimor High School in 1942 and taught school at New Hope #1 until she moved to Des Moines. After her marriage, she and Allan settled in Lorimor where she became a homemaker and mother. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star, an original founding member of the Merry Fu Book Club, and a member of the Lorimor United Methodist Church. She also served on the Lorimor City Council and was involved in many community activities.

Joann took her hobbies seriously and taught ceramics and porcelain classes in her shop. Her hands were always busy and most recently involved in jigsaw puzzles.

Memorials may be sent to the Order of the Eastern Star #180 in Winterset.
