Philip was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church for many years. He was a lover of the arts, old cars, and hard crossword puzzles. Philip lived with his oldest daughter in Georgia for 1.5 years before moving to Texas to be close to his youngest son for the last 5 months of his life.

He is survived by his loving wife Bonnie Jean Clarkson of nearly 65 years; and children; Philip Clarkson Jr. (Barbara) of Coralville, Iowa, Jon Clarkson (Dee) of Yuba City, California, Christopher Clarkson (Susan) of Denton, Texas , Lisa Garey (Richard) of Sharpsburg, Georgia, daughter Rebecca Payne of Cedar Falls, Iowa, and foster son Hung Nguyen of Alabama; Jack Clarkson of Phoenix, Arizona a nephew raised as a brother; 21 grandchildren; and 28 greatgrandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
