Arlene Elaine Mains, 86, of Indianola went to be with her Lord and Savior May 16, 2017. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the First Methodist Church in Indianola. Visitation will be Saturday from 9 AM till service time at the church. Internment will be in the Winterset Cemetery at Winterset following lunch at the church.
Arlene was born Oct 3, 1930 to Daniel G and Flossie Ray Hager, the third of 4 children. She grew up in a small, warm, loving home near Casey, IA. She became a member of the Casey Methodist church and graduated from Casey High School in 1948.
She met Leonard Mains and the two of them were married on July 24, 1949 while attending Simpson College. They could usually be found doing things together their whole lives. This included teaching at a rural school near Wichita, IA and working together in the Winterset elementary schools as Leonard’s secretary for 15 years. One summer she typed and retyped the thesis Leonard was working on for his Master’s degree. She also worked at the Winterset Day Care before retiring in 1986. She comforted many feverish children and bandaged many a scrape over the years. She was a member of United Methodist Women, Child Welfare Federation, and Legion Auxiliary.
Her family was her joy. She loved spending time with them and volunteering at church. Nephews, nieces, and grandchildren were often asked if they wanted to spend a night or a few days. She always had a smile for you and was happy to help if she could. She liked to make and share tapioca pudding and cookies with family and friends.
They called Winterset home for 52 years until they moved to Indianola in 2006 where they made more dear friends.
Family camping vacations were looked forward to each year from 1957 until about 1999 with their children and grandchildren. The oldest grandchild was 6 weeks old the first time he camped. One trip in 1960 to Canada involved 13 family members including Leonard’s parents, his brother’s family and a cousin of theirs, and his sister. There were two tents with a tarp between them, a full size mattress for the grandparents to sleep with on the ground, and three cars. They also enjoyed helping on volunteer mission trips with church friends and bank trips. She was known to sometimes trick her family on April Fools day by putting paper in sandwiches.
Survivors include her son, Lyle Mains, and his 3 step children, Lori, Chris, and Mike; daughter, Linda (Jim) Tutt; grandchildren, Bill (Jeanne) Tutt, Bob (Kerri) Tutt, and Becky (Erik) Stumpf; great granddaughters, Sophia and Maura Tutt, and Zoe Stumpf; several nieces and nephews; and friends. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leonard; sister, Betty; brothers, Dale and Orville; and great granddaughter, Doria Stumpf.
The family suggests memorials to the Indianola First United Methodist Church, Winterset Community Educational Foundation, or the Winterset First United Methodist Church.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by McCalley-Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
