Phyllis L. Shaw, 92, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Kennybrook Village in Grimes. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at West Des Moines Christian Church with a funeral service at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Phyllis was born June 27, 1924 in Madison County, IA to Lester and Elsie (Clampitt) Piatt. She graduated from Earlham High School in 1941 and Simpson College in 1945. Phyllis married Dwight Wayne Shaw in Earlham, IA on August 4, 1950. She was a school teacher in Earlham and West Des Moines and later worked as an insurance rater/trainer at Preferred Risk Insurance Company. Phyllis was a member of West Des Moines Christian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed camping, traveling, sewing, boating, and cherished her time with family and friends at Lake Okoboji for over 50 years.
Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Jeri (Mike) Elyea of Wichita Falls, TX and Sheri (Richard) Kyras of Ames; grandchildren, Michael (Natalie) Elyea, Jr. of Port Hueneme, CA, Christopher Elyea of Johnston, Ashley (Trenton) McBroom of Wichita Falls, TX and Nickolas Kyras of Ames; great-grandchildren, Triston, Hayden, Kailey, Liam and Emilee Elyea and Adeline and Tynlee McBroom; sister, Hilda Crouse of West Des Moines; and nephews and nieces, Rod and Lois Crouse, Terry and Ken Graner and Curtis and Kris Crouse. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Dwight Shaw.
