Page 5, Column 5OLD SOLDIER DIES IN HYDRO, OKLA.
Henry Griffin, old resident of Madison county and veteran of the Civil War, died at Hydro, Oklahoma, where he has lived for thirty years. He was a step-son of David Martin, an old Lincoln township pioneer and lived for years on the farm near Tusha school. The account of his death is from the Hydro News:
H. W. Griffin died Saturday evening having been seriously ill and bedfast for ten months. His health had been poor for years, but his condition did not become serious till last summer. All his children were with him when he died except Mrs. Jessie Penn of Dexter, who was unable to come on account of illness.
The funeral was conducted from the Methodist church Monday afternoon, Rev. R. C. Millhellen holding the services. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery. A large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends was present and followed him to his last resting place. Many are the friends who sorrow with the bereaved family at the death of this good man whom everyone loved. Many and beautiful were the flowers offered as a token of love and respect.
Mr. Griffin was probably the first farmer to settle here after the opening. He bought an Indian allotment not long after, he brought his family here and later bought the place 5 ½ miles south of town which was their home for many happy years.
Mr. Griffin was a Union soldier, serving faithfully throughout the war. Only two or three others survive him in this locality. The greatest sympathy is extended to those who are bereaved by his death.
