MRS. SUSANNA W. CONWAY

Susanna W., daughter of Samuel and Harriet Coate, was born in Miami county, Ohio, July 18, 1841, and died in Bloomfield, Iowa, March 4, 1926, aged 84 years, seven months and fourteen days. At the age of twelve years, she came with her her parents to Iowa, residing for a time in Iowa county near Marengo, later in Quarry, Marshall county, where she was united in marriage to Lloyd N. Conway Sept. 20, 1861.

About 1870 they moved to Madison county and settled on what is now known as the old home place at West Branch, and where the children grew to manhood and womanhood. Her companion, a Civil war veteran preceded her in death Aug. 9, 1906. There were nine children born to them, two dying in infancy, and the youngest daughter, Susie Hill in Feb. 1915. The six living are as follows: Linn A. Conway of Macksburg; Mrs. Mamie Rowe of Bloomfield, Mrs. Hattie Riddle, Lacona; Mrs. Emma Craven, Macksburg; Carl L. Conway, Macksburg; and Glen W. Conway, Tulsa, Okla. There are also eighteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Of her immediate family she is survived by one brother, D.A. Coate of Parson, Kansas and three sisters, Mrs. Esther Rose, Orange, Calif., Mrs. Cynthia Stallings, Oswego, Kansas and Mrs. Ollie Hart, Macksburg, Iowa. Both of her parents were ministers of the Gospel, and she was converted in 1858 at the age of 17, and all of these many years has been a faithful member of the M.E church. She entered into the experience of Full Salvation in August 1893 and has been for many years a member of both the State and National Holiness Associations. Although she lived a busy life of mother in the farm home, her children’s earliest memory of mother was of her devotions to God and of her clear voice ringing out in prayer and class meetings in which she was leader for many years in the little old West Branch church which they helped to build near their home.

After being made a widow, she made her home with the daughter Susie in California until her death and the past ten years has divided her time among her children, spending winters with the daughter Mamie in Bloomfield. She has ever been of a cheerful disposition, always thinking and doing for others.

Some two years ago she suffered a severe illness of several weeks, from which she never fully recovered, and at that time she told her children all was well and she was just awaiting (unreadable text) today we know she is free from all suffering and care, and we sorrow not as those who have no hope, but confidently look forward to a glad reunion as we gather home one by one.

The funeral services were held at the home of L.A. Conway, the old home, conducted by Rev. Atha, pastor of M.E. church at Macksburg. All of the six children were present, one sister, Mrs. Hart, and and a host of other relatives and friends and interment made in West Branch cemetery by the side of her companion.
