Orville Bast’s Mother Died June 11

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. June 14 at Stuart Methodist church for Mrs. Laura Bast of Stuart, mother of Orville Bast of this city. Mrs. Bast, 89, passed away on Saturday, June 11 at the Greenfield hospital where she had been a patient for five weeks. She had been in poor health for the past 10 years.

Rev. Hugh Williams, pastor of the church officiated at the ceremony. Music was provided by Robin Lawson who also accompanied his nephew Robert Lawson as he sang. Flowers were cared for by Beulah Stanton, Bertie Brinton, Doris Hammond, and Marianna Ledlie. The casket bearers were Chester Ledlie, Don Miller, Wayne Glazebrook, Cal Hammond, Kenneth Brinton, and Seldon Stanton. Interment was in the Oak Grove cemetery at Stuart.

Laura Belle Bennett was born in Madison county on Sept. 5, 1870 and departed this life on June 11, 1960 at the Adair county hospital at the age of 89 years, 9 months, and 6 days. She was the last surviving member of a family of eight children—four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. In early life she attended Dexter Normal school and later taught in a rural school. She was united in marriage to Bernhardt Bast of Dexter, March 5, 1894. To this union were born Orville of Dexter and Lucille of Stuart. Her husband preceded her in death August 22, 1922.

She joined the Worthington Methodist church south of Earlham and later transferred her membership to Stuart. In the past ten years she has been in declining health. Her interests were with her family home and garden.

She leaves to mourn her loss beside her children, her daughter-in-law, Isabella, who had given her much happiness and comfort and also a beloved granddaughter and husband, Mary Belle and Gene Harvey of Spokane, Washington; also many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
