Death of Capt. Shriver

J. G. Shriver received a message Monday announcing the death of his father at the A. B. Shriver home in Artesia, a suburb of Los Angeles. Another wire Wednesday stated that the remains would arrive here Saturday.

Capt. Wm. R. Shriver was one of our most widely known men. In 1854 he became a resident of this county, first following his trade as wagon maker. Three years of service in the Civil War, four years as county clerk, and a term as postmaster of Winterset are among the records of his past public service. As actual organizer of the republican party here, he was a well known man politically. Honesty, sincerity and genuineness were strong characteristics of this splendid man and his passing will recall to many an old timer, incidents of interest to this city and county.

CAPT. SHRIVER DIES IN LOS ANGELES

Had Reached Ripe Old Age. Was Veteran of Civil War. Prominent in County Affairs.

Captain William R. Shriver, many years a prominent and leading citizen of Winterset, died Monday at the home of his son, A. B. Shriver, in Los Angeles. A brief telegram to J. G. Shriver announced that his father was dead and that the body would be brought to Winterset. No arrangements for the funeral have been made as it is not known when the body will arrive. The cause of his death was not given, but as Captain Shriver would have been 86 years old in April, it is probable that it is old age.

Captain Shriver came from Ohio to Winterset in 1854, after a short stop in Mahaska county where he had a brother and sister. He was a wheelwright by trade and the wagon shop which he built stands today occupied by Ernest Moorman. He took a prominent part in the early affairs of the town and when the war broke out, enlisted in the First Iowa Cavalry and was made captain. Before the war he was married to Martha Forester who died in 1900. Of their eight children, only two, Alvin and James, are living.

After the war was over, Captain Shriver opened his wagon shop. He built the stone house that is now the United Presbyterian parsonage. In 1876 he was elected county clerk of Madison county. When he retired from office after serving six years, he moved to the farm north of Winterset. He served several years as chairman of the republican central committee. He was appointed postmaster by President Harrison and served four years. He was a member of the Evening Star Lodge, a Knight Templar and a member of Pitzer Post G.A.R. After the death of Mrs. Shriver he made his home for several years with his daughter, Mrs. Kate Shriver, and later went to California.

It was a shock to Capt. Shriver’s many old friends in Winterset when it was learned that he was dead. He was physically almost a perfect man, and was possessed of enormous strength. His mind was in keeping with his body and he was decided in opinion and decisive in action. Under a bluff exterior he had a kind heart that impelled him to many kind and charitable deeds.

Corkey, pastor of the Presbyterian church conducted the services at the home after which the G.A.R. gave their ritualistic service, which was a beautiful tribute to their departed comrade. Six members of the Iowa National Guard served as honorary pall bearers. The Masonic order had charge of the services at the Winterset cemetery.
