Elizabeth Judkins was born near Wilmington, Ohio, February 19, 1835. When about three years old she moved to Owens county and later to Howard county, Indiana. Then when about eleven years old she was converted and joined the M.E. church at a camp meeting held by Rev. Henry Badley.

She came to Indianola, Iowa, June 12, 1853, and from there moved to Winterset where she was married September 2, 1857, to Robert Cleland, and has lived in Madison county till her death. To them were born nine children, five of whom have died. The husband, one son and three daughters survive her.

Nineteen years ago she had her first attack of rheumatism, which remained constantly with her till her death. For over fourteen years she has not been able to walk and for about six years has been entirely helpless, yet through all these years of terrible suffering she has shown the true spirit of Christian fortitude and patience and face death with a smiling face.

About two weeks before her death she gave directions as to the place of her burial, and desired that Rev. S. W. Lee, whom she had known for over thirty-five years, might preach her funeral. When he came to her bedside the next day she gave him the facts of her life, and in talking of her approaching death, she was as happy as a child in the sunshine.

July 10, 1904, from her home in Bevington, she went to her eternal rest from pain and the next day many more than could be crowded into the church came to her funeral at Blair Chapel.
