Robert Lyle Thompson was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, August 15, 1843, and departed this life March 27, 1926, at the age of 82 years, 7 months and 12 days.

He was presented for baptism in the Neshanock Presbyterian church by his Christian parents, Henry and Sarah Moore Thompson, Rev. McGrary officiating at the baptismal service.

He came to Iowa with his parents in 1845, traveling on boat by way of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, locating on a farm near the little town of Andrew in Jackson county.

He remained on the farm until September 22, 1862, when he enlisted in the service of his country in Company A, 9th Regiment Iowa Volunteer infantry, serving two years and ten months. After the war he went back to the farm in Jackson county, where he remained until the year 1867, when he came to Madison county and engaged in farming.

He was united in marriage to Henrietta Clark January 12, 1870. To this union were born ten children, seven daughters and three sons, all of whom are living except one daughter who died in infancy.

He had been a member of the United Presbyterian church for more than fifty years, being at one time elder in the North Branch and Dexter congregations.

He was a member of Pitzer Post G.A.R. He leaves to his descendants the greatest heritage that can be bestowed; that of honesty, truth and sobriety.

He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, three sons and six daughter, also two brothers, Henry J., who lives at Portland, Oregon, and John C. who lives at De Soto, Iowa.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. Z. Allen at the United Presbyterian church, Tuesday at 2 o’clock. Interment was made in the McDonald cemetery.
