Michael J. "Shorty" McCarthy

Michael McCarthy, 67, of Lorimor, died on Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston.

Celebration of Life Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at East Union High School Concourse in Afton. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Flag presentation will be conducted following the service by Theodore J. Martens of Afton and Creston VFW Post #1797. Burial will be at Moon Cemetery.

Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Afton.

Memorials are to the American Legion in Lorimor or the Shorty McCarthy Scholarship Fund.

Michael J. "Shorty" McCarthy was born on July 26, 1949, in Menlo, Ia to John and Doris (Meisenheimer) McCarthy. Shorty's parents passed away when he was four and was raised by his aunt and uncle Dallas and Lucille Meisenheimer, who he called his parents. Shorty graduated from Menlo High School with the class of 1967. Following his graduation, he was drafted into the United States Army and served his country during the Vietnam War.

Shorty was united in marriage to Judy Irene Mitchell on October 26, 1974 in Lorimor, Ia. They were blessed with four children, Melissa, Lindsay, Dallas and Travis. Together they resided in Afton where Shorty was a farmer. Shorty also worked as the custodian for East Union High school for 3o years. He retired from there in 2009 at the age of 60.

Shorty was a member of the American Legion Post #96 of Lorimor.

Shorty is survived by his two daughters, Melissa Wimber of Afton and Lindsay (husband Eric) Johnsen of Ames; two sons, Dallas (wife Michele) McCarthy of Broomfield, Colo. and Travis (wife Juanita) McCarthy of Macksburg; mother Lucille Meisenheimer of Winterset; grandchildren, Kimberly De Long (Fiance Adam Hoffman), Carter Johnsen, Cole Wimber, Dylan Wimber, Ava McCarthy and Gia McCarthy; sister Rosemary (husband Gary) Barrett of Guthrie Center; and John Meisenheimer of Winterset.

Shorty was preceded in death by his biological parents and father Dallas Meisenheimer.
