Mrs. Elizabeth Vierling, a long time resident of this county, died early Monday morning, April 19th, at the Winterset hospital. It is said that Mrs. Vierling put some kerosene or coal oil in the hard coal stove, and there was an explosion, her clothes catching on fire. She rushed out of doors, and neighbors came to her rescue and put out the blaze. However, her body was badly burned and she was taken to the hospital. She was conscious part of the afternoon, but fortunately did not suffer a great deal.

Mrs. Vierling came to this county with her husband Benjamin in 1870 and settled in Scott township. Mr. Vierling died in 1905. Mrs. Vierling has since lived in Winterset. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Henry L. Bruett, of Laurens, Ernest of this county, and George E. of Des Moines. It is particularly sad because Mrs. Vierling’s daughter, Mrs. Bruett, was severely burned by a gasoline explosion three weeks ago, and is critically ill and unable to be out of bed.

Funeral services were held at the home on East court avenue at 10 a.m. conducted by the Rev. W. Z. Allen. Interment was made south of Patterson.
