Page 4, Column 2Funeral services were held Friday, April 26, from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Jefferson for Valeria M. Groves, 80, longtime Jefferson resident.
The Rev. Richard Macke, pastor of the church, officiated. Bill McGregor was musician, with Doris McGregor as organist. Honorary casket bearers were Edward Anderson, Robert Rhoades, Romayne Burgess and Emerald Hanson. Mass servers were David Coyne and Robbie Pederson.
Casket bearers were Douglas K. Smith, Daniel Terrill, Merle Walsh, Timothy Terrill, Roy V. Smith and Neal Lane. Interment was in Jefferson cemetery.
A prayer service was held Thursday evening, April 25, at Hastings Funeral Home in Jefferson.
Valeria Margaret Groves, daughter of Patrick and Daisy Lyon Haley, was born Aug. 6, 1904, at Pipestone, MN. She died April 22 at the Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson.
Valeria received her education in the Pipestone schools where she graduated from Pipestone High School in 1923. On Jan. 1, 1924, Valeria was married to Guy Groves at Yankton, SD. They made their home in Yankton for a time where their daughters Alice and Doris were born.
In 1932 the family moved to Winterset for a couple of years before moving to Jefferson in 1934. After moving to Jefferson, Valeria helped operate the family business, Groves Tavern. Following her husband’s death in 1953, Valeria went to work as bookkeeper and clerk at Tucker Pharmacy where she worked until due to failing health, she retired in 1971.
Valeria was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Jefferson and St. Joseph’s Guild.
Valeria was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Guy in 1953, one daughter, Alice (Tootie) in 1979, one infant granddaughter, and three brothers.
She is survived by one daughter, Doris Smith of Fort Dodge; six grandchildren, Timothy Terrill and wife Judith of Golden, CO, Daniel Terrill and Martha of Milwaukee, WI, Judith Ann (Mrs. Dennis) Bartz of Hales Corner, WI, Carol Anne Christensen of Milwaukee, WI, Tami (Mrs. Edward) Anderson of Midlothian, IL, and Douglas Smith and wife Joanne of Cedar Rapids; two brothers, Eugene Haley of Sioux Falls, SD, and Francis Haley of Greenfield; and one sister, Genevieve Walsh of Yankton, SD.
