DOROTHY SCAR BENZ
Born in Linn Grove, IA on Sep 9, 1931
Departed on Nov 6, 2016

Dorothy Scar Benz entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 6, 2016 in her home at the Stuart Community Care Center from natural causes.

Dorothy Henrietta Aurand was born September 9, 1931 in Linn Grove, Iowa to Mabel Dorothea Braunschweig and Albert Aurand. A few minutes later, her twin brother, Dwight, was born. Anxiously awaiting their arrival at home was their older brother, Harold. She was baptized on November 29, 1931, in the Linn Grove Lutheran Congregation. This started the seed that grew into a strong faith, and she was confirmed July 14, 1946, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Linn Grove, Iowa. Her confirmation day sermon text was Acts 20: 32a Now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among those who are sanctified.

Dorothy grew up during the depression and learned to appreciate the little things. When she was 15 years old, being a hard worker, Dorothy (and her brother, Dwight) got their first jobs and were very proud to help contribute towards the family’s food and clothing. Even though she worked, she still found time to play basketball well. She graduated from Arnolds Park High in 1949.

It was in living out her faith that Dorothy met the love of her life, Leonard Charles Scar, while attending a Luther Walther League meeting. They were married on December 8, 1951, at Trinity Lutheran in Des Moines, Iowa. They lived in the town of Earlham for 9 months, moved to the Shaw Farm for 1 year, then purchased the Golightly Farmstead and lived there until 1984. It was during this time that three children blessed their union: Susan, Cindy, and Steven. After the girls were married, Dorothy, Leonard, and Steven moved to the Henkle home in 1984. Shortly after, Leonard suffered a fatal heart attack. Dorothy married Howard Benz on May 19, 1990.

Dorothy’s hobbies, interests, and activities all centered around her faith, family, and friends; these fulfilled her life. Dorothy was an active member of the Earlham Chautauqua Circle (Christmases were her favorite); she taught nursery class at Zion and was active in the Lutheran Ladies Aid. She spent many hours feeding and watching birds on her deck, reading her Bible, gardening, and spending time with her family. She had small jobs from time to time. She could often be heard talking about the children she babysat for or co-workers she worked with. By far, the job she loved the most was caring for her family.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Susan (Bill) Smith, Cindy (Monty) Smith (all of Earlham), and Steven (Heather) Scar of Adair; grandchildren: Christi (Mark) Varner, Brad Smith, Josh Smith, Jennifer Smith (Charles Herrick), Spencer, Sydney, Destiny, Zachary, KateLynn, and Dominic Scar; and great-grandchildren: Matthew, Luke, and Joseph Varner; Charlie and Addison Herrick.

Preceding Dorothy in death are Dorothy’s husband, Leonard; her great-granddaughter, Hannah Nikole Varner; her parents; twin brother, Dwight Albert Aurand; and older brother, Harold Aurand.

Service will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran of Adel and officiated by Pastor Jodi Hinrichs. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. She will be buried alongside her beloved husband, Leonard, at the Penn Center Cemetery, south of Earlham, Iowa.

Memorial donations in Dorothy’s honor may be directed to the family for future distribution to organizations that were close to Dorothy’s heart.

The family would like to extend special thanks to the staff of the Community Care Center of Stuart and all those that cared for Dorothy over the last several years.

In the words of Dorothy “Love and Prayers.”
