Cidney Cecil In Camp Here For Year Found Dead Early Saturday
Officials at the Civilian Conservation Corp here indicated Wednesday that an investigation was under way in the death of Cidney Cecil, 35-year-old member of their camp, whose body was found early Saturday morning at the west edge of Indianola. Officers say the body showed evidence of being dragged by an automobile for several miles.
It was reported that Cecil had been picked up near the Winterset Community Auction barn Friday night by a group of Fort Des Moines soldiers and was taken to Martensdale “Y” where he asked to be let out. He continued on foot toward Indianola and was observed by the occupants of one car walking out on the pavement and shortly afterwards another motorist reported to the Warren county sheriff that he had seen a man asleep or hurt on the highway in about the same vicinity. The sheriff investigated and was unable to find the man.
Shortly after midnight the sheriff received a second report that a man’s body had been found at the west edge of Indianola. Sheriff Null of Madison county was notified that one of the camp boys had been killed and he and a clerk from the camp drove to Indianola and identified the body.
A military funeral was given Cecil here Sunday afternoon at three o’clock with Colonel Tritt, chaplain of the Fort Des Moines post, conducting the services. The members of the camp attended. Cecil is survived by a brother Rex, at Cove, Arkansas.
