Wanda Louise Keeney Cleveland, 100, passed away Friday, October 14, 2016 at the home of her daughter, Fran Hatfield. Services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 19 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with visitation one hour prior to service. Burial will follow in the Rosemount Cemetery, Milo, IA.
Wanda was born March 31, 1916 In Des Moines, Iowa. She was the fourth child of Raymond Vernon Keeney and Cleo Keeney. The family lived in Altoona, Iowa, and then on several different farms in Warren County. Wanda attended county schools as well as St. Mary’s School and schools in Des Moines and Osceola, Iowa.
The family moved to Milo, Iowa in 1932 and Wanda graduated from Milo High School in 1935. After graduation, she worked for several business places in Milo. In 1942, Wanda went to Des Moines where she worked at Neal’s Drug Store for a short time and then at the Ankeny Ordinance Plant.
On November 23, 1942, Wanda married Gerald Francis Cleveland while he was on furlough from the Army. In 1943, she moved to Birmingham, Alabama, to be where Gerald was stationed. In the spring of 1943, Gerald was sent overseas, so Wanda returned to Des Moines and renewed her work at the Ankeny Ordinance Plant. She worked there two and a half years.
Gerald was honorably discharged from the Army and in September of 1945 Gerald and Wanda settled in Milo, Iowa, where later their daughter, Frances Ann, was born. In 1948, they moved to a farm near Mallard, Iowa, where a second daughter, Donna Louise, was born. They continued to farm near Mallard for five years.
In 1953, Gerald and Wanda bought a farm in Madison County, Iowa.
In 1964, Wanda began working at Kresge’s department store in Des Moines. She continued to work there for six years.
They remained on the farm for many years with Gerald passing away February 24, 2000. Wanda left the farm in 2005 due to declining health and lived first with her daughter, Donna, and later with her daughter, Fran.
Wanda is survived by daughters and sons-in-law Donna and Steve Reineck of St. Charles and Fran and Don Hatfield of Cedar Rapids; seven grandsons and their families: Don and Kristen Hatfield, Quintin, Austin, and Griffin; Jeremy Gibbons and Julie Dalrymple and Lilly; Gary and Kristi Hatfield, Hannah, Logan, Chloe and Mason; Matt and Darci Gibbons, Claire and Kassie; Mike and Mary Ann Hatfield; Steve Hatfield; Dan Hatfield and Haidyn; three granddaughters and their families; Karen Wright and Andrew; Ann Hatfield and Kurt Gurley and Laurel, Adelyn and Tesia; and Amy and Chad Ray and Morgan, Jackson, and Owen; and one step-grandson and his family; Kurt and Sarah Reineck, Annabelle and William.
