Roger Dale McVey, 74, of Earlham passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at HCI-Kavanagh House Hospice in Des Moines. Visitation will be held from 2-4 P.M. on Sunday, October 16th at the Johnson Family Funeral Home in Earlham. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, October 17th at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Waukee. Burial will follow the service at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery, near Van Meter. Reception luncheon will be at the Van Meter American Legion Veterans Reception Center. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be direct to the Van Meter American Legion and sent in care of Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, IA 50250.

Roger Dale McVey, beloved husband, has gone home.

Roger was born in Corydon, Iowa to William James McVey and Hallie Evelyn Dent on April 4, 1942 and died October 12, 2016 at the age of 74. He was the sixth of seven brothers. Roger graduated from Ontario, California High School with the class of 1957 and attended Mt. San Antonio College and Pacific State Hospital working as a licensed Psychiatric Tech. He joined the US Navy in 1961 and served for four years. He worked for 28 years at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines working in the psych ward with adults and adolescences. He also worked for five years at the Dallas County Home in Adel where he retired. Roger married Beverly Jane Cox on April 22, 1973 at the Women’s Y in Des Moines and the reception was held at the Goldfinch Room. They were married for 43 years. The lived many years in Adel and lastly in Earlham.

Roger loved to go fishing and watching Drake University football. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards, coins, Elvis memorabilia and old glassware. Roger served many years as a Boy Scouts leader. You could often find Roger sitting on his front porch. He especially loved his “boys” Tiger and Buttercup.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father; step-father, Ray Butterfield; his brothers: William L. Sinclair, Donald L. Sinclair, Gerald G. Sinclair, and Richard J. McVey.

He is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; “two boys”, Tiger and Buttercup; and brothers, LaVerne Sinclair and Melvin E. Sinclair; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss him dearly.

The family would like to thank all their friends and neighbors for all they did for Roger.
