The Raccoon’s Victim

He died the death of a hero, did young James Dooley. He was not facing the enemy upon the field of battle, but he laid down his own life in a successful attempt to save the life of a friend.

His body lies undiscovered upon the bottom of the river, but his heroic action will long remain in the minds of all, and all will unite in applying to him the name of hero.

James Dooley was a son of Squire James Dooley, who has lived for many years in the vicinity of Booneville. He was about 16 years of age, and was one of the most popular young men of his neighborhood.

Sunday last in company with some companions he was bathing in the Raccoon at a point known as the Callanan Island. One of his companions was taken with a cramp. Seeing his condition Dooley went to his assistance. Just as he had placed the drowning man in safety he was himself caught by the current and black water of the river closed over him.

A large crowd has used every endeavor to recover the body, but so far without avail. The general impression is that it is either buried by the shifting sand or lodged in the brush pile of some deep hole.

All honor to the memory of James Dooley, the hero.

All peace to his soul.---Van Meter Exponent.
