Drifts Cleared For Patient

A Madison county snow plow battled 6-foot drifts for three quarters of a mile in the middle of the night Monday in order to get an expectant mother to the hospital.

Madison county authorities received a call about midnight Monday to come to the aid of Mrs. Ted McDonald, who was snowbound at her home 13 miles northwest of Winterset in Douglas township.

Bill Baker and Frank Foreman of the county road gang responded with a large county snow plow. They were accompanied by Sheriff Rex Rouse and five neighbors with scoop shovels.

It was necessary to plow out three-fourths mile of road to get Mrs. McDonald out to the main secondary road. She was taken to Memorial hospital in Winterset, where she gave birth to an infant son later that morning. The baby was premature and died shortly after birth.
