FARM ACCIDENT FATAL TO GLENN EGY LAST FRIDAY

County’s First Farm Mishap Fatality of the year 1957

Madison county’s first fatal farm accident of 1957 occurred Friday morning when Glenn Egy of Winterset was fatally injured while working at the William C. (Bill) Johnson farm nine miles southeast of Winterset.

The accident happened at 10:30 a.m. as Egy, with the help of other men at the farm, attempted to move a grain elevator. According to witnesses, the elevator toppled over and crushed the victim.

Working with Egy at the farm were Mr. Johnson, a nephew of the deceased, and Ray and Walter Egy, brothers of the accident victim. The farm is known as the “Queen Place” on the St. Charles road.

Egy was rushed to Madison County Memorial hospital, where he died within an hour.

James Glenn Egy was born Dec. 21, 1894, in Madison county, the son of David and Mertie Egy. He was a life-long resident of this county, and served overseas during World War I.

He was married to Vivian Ridout at Council Bluffs, Ia. on Oct. 1, 1923. The wife died several years ago. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter.

He is survived by two sons, David and Dean Egy of Winterset; four sisters, Mrs. Roy Cunningham of Winterset, Mrs. Lillie Johnson of Menlo, Mrs. Hazel Casey of Newton, Ia., and Mrs. Ruth Parcaut of Des Moines; four brothers, Walter, Joe, Claude and Ray, all of Winterset; and seven grandchildren.

Officiating at the funeral services Monday afternoon at Richards funeral home was the Rev. Fred Boyce. Burial was in the Winterset cemetery.
